A brief history of B&B.
When former hoteliers Denis and Pam Brownlow started selling selected Hygena products from a hotel in Mona Drive, Douglas in 1978, they could never have known that their company B&B Sales as it was known in the beginning would evolve into a major Island business, employing thirty staff and operating from 225,000 square foot premises at Snugborough Trading Estate.
It’s been a story of hard work and determination, but provides budding entrepreneurs from all walks of life with ample evidence that success is achievable if you have the right attitude.
Denis challenged the perceived wisdom of major furniture retailers in the UK, disagreeing strongly with the view of UK reps that goods from each end of the price spectrum could be successfully marketed from the same store.
It’s a philosophy the firm has rigidly adhered to and to the day customers can view suites priced under £1,000 alongside others offered at over £3,000. Part of the recipe for success has been our policy of regularly visiting trade shows and marketing events in the UK and Europe. This ensures our staff are focused on the fashions of the day and on the specifications of the products we sell.
We pride ourselves on customer service and do not compromise on its performance. We employ our own team of fitters in relation to kitchen and bedroom furniture we sell. They work for the firm and therefore have pride in the work that they do.
Our showrooms are spacious and impressive by any standards, but newcomers and customers under the age of 25 won’t be aware of the circumstances which led to its creation. The former building, on the same site, was destroyed in a blaze in 1993, which tore through our premises, destroying the entire stock within and the building itself.
It was a body blow to the company which had established a strong presence in the area after moving from Circular Road back in 1981.
Many companies would have thrown in the towel in the face of such a catastrophe, but such is the spirit of the team here, we were back up and running with a full range of kitchen and bedroom displays in temporary rented units in Onchan shopping centre, within just three weeks! Showing that with hard work anything in life can be achieved.
In the meantime the site was cleared at Snugborough and exactly 54 weeks later a new purpose built showroom opened its doors for business.
As with everything time stands still for no man, Denis has now passed the reins to his son Chris. Chris has worked at B&B Furniture now for over 20 years and is continuing the family tradition, whilst injecting his own vision for the future of the company.
